All about HJT - The Role of 0BB and SMBB Technologies

2025/09/12

The solar industry is evolving rapidly with groundbreaking technologies like 0BB (Zero Busbar) and SMBB (Super Multi-Busbar). 0BB, by eliminating the main busbar, is set to lead the next generation, while SMBB plays a key transitional role.

Now, join us to explore how these innovations are shaping the future of high-efficiency solar cells!

01 Technology Roadmap

0BB technology eliminates the traditional main busbars by using ultra-thin soldering ribbons to connect the cell's fingers, focusing on a minimalist design for enhanced efficiency.

On the other hand, HJT solar cells with SMBB technology feature 15 to 25 busbars, and ultra-fine and rounded ribbons with tightly compressed spacing, enabling more efficient current collection and reduced resistive losses.

02 Efficiency & Costs

0BB HJT solar cell eliminates front-side busbars and reducing shading for larger active area for sunlight absorption. This leads to cell bifaciality above 95%, while optimized manufacturing processes also deliver significant savings in silver paste, silicon, and equipment costs.

HJT solar cells with SMBB technology deliver >90% bifaciality, with thinner busbars boosting rear-side generation. The process works with existing lines with minimal upgrades, though silver savings are limited and higher welding precision is needed.

03 Application Scenario

0BB technology offers broad adaptability, working seamlessly with mainstream solar cell production methods such as HJT, TOPCon, and XBC. Huasun has already deployed this advancement in ultra-high-efficiency 0BB HJT modules designed for utility-scale, commercial, and residential projects, ensuring comprehensive market coverage. In addition, the combination of HJT cells with 0BB architecture enhances the potential for perovskite tandem integration, paving the way for even greater efficiency gains.

SMBB technology offers wide applicability, making it highly suitable for mainstream n-type cell applications and ensuring versatility across diverse solar projects. At the same time, it plays a key transitional role during the early stages of 0BB commercialization, serving as the preferred interim solution for many manufacturers as they move toward full adoption of 0BB technology.
